Itching, Sarcoids, Melanomas, Mallenders & Sallenders
The horse's skin & coat can suffer from a number of conditions, with a variety of causes, which can be hard to identify & treat. Itching can occur when there is no obvious cause , such as lice or mange. It can be caused by a sensitivity to an environmental factor, or a feed ingredient.

Above is a photograph of skin bumps caused by insect bites. Hives (urticaria) can also be caused by a feed ingredient or supplement. If you complete & submit a Nutrition Enquiry Form the author will check your feed ingredients to see if there are any present known to cause itching.
Sarcoids & Melanomas

A few months before he sold Gravenhorse Feeds the author set up a trial for a supplement he formulated for sarcoids & melanomas . After 3 months the sarcoid pictured above had shrunk considerably . The horse's vet had earlier declined to treat it as it was too near the eye. Other customers reported similar results, with sarcoids eventually disappearing altogether.
No customer reported any success in controlling melanomas, unfortunately.
Mallenders & Sallenders are scabs that form on the legs as a result of excess keratin production. They occur most commonly in heavy, feathered breeds such as draft horses, & cobs. They can be v ery painful & in extetremis lead to lameness. Treatment is difficult & veterinary advice is strongly recommended. The author knows one owner who finds Simple System's Mallemash effective in controlling the problem. The author notes that Simple Systems do not use manufactured mineral & vitamin supplements, relying solely on natural sources. He therefore advises owners to watch out for possible deficiency symptoms & if so to add a suitable supplement or balancer. For more advice complete the Nutrition Enquiry Form
