Platform scales are the most accurate but extremely expensive. Major feed companies have teams of sales reps who will weigh your horses for free but only recommend their firm's products. The author will recommend those which he considers most suitable; this may well include the Gravenhorse ones with which he is familiar, having formulated them.
Horseheath Nutrition's Online service uses visual scoring which you can perform with https://www.bluecross.org.uk/advice/horse/how-to-body-score-your-horse & then enter the score into the Enquiry Form.
If there is sufficient demand a set of scales will be purchased for yard visits. Fees will be based on £5 per horse with a minimum charge depending on distance to your yard

2 essential tools for ensuring accurate feeding!

Diet Analysis The data you submit is compared with the recommended rates in the Nutrient Requirements of Horses 6th Edition plus more recent research data . Dietary excesses & deficiencies will be identified & management issues addressed then a report is prepared as follows:
Services Onl
Online:
1. Basic Report Your horse's data will be assessed & a report prepared as per example 1, which advises simple diet or management changes.
2. Detailed Analysis - you will be receive a printed report showing as much nutritional data as possible. Accuracy is limited as it is impossible to accurately measure a horse's grass consumption and would also require an analysis of the pasture. Calculations are based on estimated intake from average data.
Mineral ratios are also examined, to look for imbalances e.g copper/zinc ratio ideally 1:3 or 1:4
A completed Nutrition Enquiry Form is required for each horse. This will then be assessed & a preliminary report prepared, with a request for more information, if required. You will also be advised of the appropriate type of report you require & an estimate of the fee involved. Basic reports advising a simple feed or management change start at £29.50; those requiring a full nutrient analysis will cost a further £25 On receipt of the appropriate payment the report will be e-mailed to you. A printed report mailed to you will cost £10 to cover postage & time
Yard Visits can be made up to around 75 miles from mid_Beds & start at £50 with extra fees depending on the number of horses & time & distance involved. Submitting a Nutrition Enquiry form beforehand will enable John to prepare an accurate report in the comfort of his home, so that he can first do any research which may be required to ensure accuracy.
