Arthritis, Stiff Joints & Impaired Mobility
Horses, like dogs, humans, and most other animal species, will, as they age, start to experience wear of the cartilage which lines the various joints, giving rise to the condition known as arthritis. The pain associated with it can be alleviated by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone, part of a group known as NSAIDs. Vets can also inject steroids into affected joints.
Unfortunately some painkillers can in the long-term also cause ulcers in the stomach & further down the digestive tract. Traditional medicine can provide a solution, in the form of herbs with powerful anti-inflammatory properties such as turmeric, boswellia, ginger, Devil’s Claw, etc. Whilst these are effective at controlling pain they only mask the symptoms. Providing supplements such as Methyl Sulphonyl Methane, Glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin, green lipped muscle etc, will enable repair of damaged cartilage & maintenance of its health. Such supplements can be given to the middle-aged horse to prevent or delay the onset of arthritis. For more information & advice complete & submit a Nutrition Enquiry Form
